What is an acceptable running cost? The cost of running your spa will be dependent upon how and when you use it. It stands to reason that the more insulation you have the less your spa will cost to run. Some manufacturers only foam the bottom of the shell in an effort to keep manufacturing cost down. As a rule of thumb the small savings made at time of purchase will be wiped out within 18 months to 2 years by the increased running cost. A full foam or partial foam spa should cost somewhere around £3.75 and £5 per week to run. On a day that the spa is not used the only cost is to power the small 24-hour circulation pump, which is helping the filter system to keep your water crystal clear and clean. Saratoga publish the running cost of all our spas in kw/h - there is probably a good reason that a few others don't 2. What should I look for in the quality of build? Much of what you will want to know will be under the cabinet and any spa retailer should be more than happy to remove a panel and show you inside their spa – if they are not then ask your self why not. One of the things you will be able to see from the outside is the finish of the cabinet and its relationship to the shell. If the shell is lip mounted (where the shell sits on a timber lip all the way around the spa) then you could have problems with water collecting on the lip and over a period of time attacking the timber and therefore threatening the structure supporting you hot tub. If a shell ‘rolls over’ the cabinet then look at the gap between the shell and the cabinet – ideally the two should ‘face up’ with a seamless line between the acrylic shell and the cabinet. If you can get even the smallest fingers between the two then you could have problems. Firstly precious little fingers could get broken if they are placed under the shell where it rolls over the cabinet. Secondly it only takes the smallest of gaps to be exploited by field mice and similar looking for a nice warm place to nest and have babies (with an endless supply of pipe work and cable to chew on -which could prove an expensive repair). You should also look at the quality of the cabinet – does it flex or is it robust? A visit to our showroom will give you and idea of a quality finish of a hot tub which keeps out unwanted visitors with its cabinet fitted build and integral UPVC base.. 3. What factors should I consider for ease of maintenance? You should look for things that are going to make life easy in routine maintenance. Does the filter cover fully come away in one simple action leaving the filters exposed or do you have to take the filter housing to pieces in several stages and then fumble inside at awkward angles? Is the spa fitted with bleed valves for refills or would you have to find and bleed a pump in the case of a bad airlock? Are the headrests secured with a vertical fixing working with a vertical force or a horizontal one working against it thus exposing you to unnecessary repairs when the headrests strain or break – again a visit to our showroom will enable you to see these and many other time saving initiatives that are fitted onto our tubs as standard. 4. How many jets will I need? Actually it is not the number of jets that is important but the type and design of jetting and the way if has been designed in terms of pump flow rates. Don't be fooled by websites that count one jet with a number of holes in its design as a number of jets or that count air blowers holes as additional jets. When it comes to jetting it really is quality not quantity. The best selling Saratoga Spa on a worldwide basis contains just 43 jets and what it delivers is an impressive performance and not an impressive jet count which may under perform due to the demands on the pumps. 5. What is needed to install a spa? All that is needed is a uniform level surface, a hose pipe and the electrical tails for us to wire directly into the spa. The circuit should be protected by a residual current device (RCD) – if in doubt consult your electrician. 8. Are all spas the same?
